Incoming USC freshman dies in collision on I-110 freeway

first_imgLos Angeles Fire Department paramedics pronounced Olson dead on the scene. The CHP, which is investigating the incident, said it doesn’t know why Olson was walking in the FasTrak lanes at the time of the collision. Police have arrested the driver of the first vehicle and are still searching for the operator of the second one.  Olson was struck by a vehicle travelling south on the I-110 freeway near 37th Street while he was walking in the FasTrak lanes shortly before 2:45 a.m. Saturday. He was then struck by a second vehicle. Though the first driver stopped to help Olson, the second vehicle drove away, according to the California Highway Patrol.  Olson was matriculated to study business administration at the Marshall School of Business after graduating from Corona del Mar High School this past spring.  Folt and Vice President for Student Affairs Winston Crisp sent a memo to the University community Monday expressing condolences for Olson’s family and friends. The University also offered counseling services to students, faculty and staff through the USC Counseling Center.  Matthew Olson, an incoming freshman from Corona del Mar High School, died Saturday in a traffic collision. He was 18.   Corona del Mar principal Kathy Scott said the high school has resources available for students and staff affected by Olson’s death. “[Matthew] was the consummate teammate, always looking out for the interests of his friends and teammates before his own.” Corona del Mar volleyball coach Ryan Schachter wrote in a statement emailed to the Daily Trojan. “His legacy is much more than his incredible achievements in the classroom or in the athletic arena, he was a genuinely kind person and those who were fortunate to have known Matt are much better for it.” “We understand that a loss like this can be traumatic and that everyone grieves differently,” Scott wrote in a statement to the Daily Trojan.  He played on Corona del Mar’s 2018 National Championship volleyball team and earned a Coach’s Award for Hardest Working Player. In high school, Olson was also a member of Future Business Leaders of America and the Best Buddies program, where he volunteered with people with disabilities, President Carol Folt said in an email to the USC community.  Folt wrote in her email that the University will inform students of memorial plans as information becomes available. “Whatever your circumstances and wherever this new semester may take you, we ask that you please keep Matt and his family in your thoughts and prayers,” Folt and Crisp wrote. last_img read more

WEF Africa 2016: connecting Africa’s resources through digital transformation

first_imgWith Africa’s economy under pressure, the World Economic Forum on Africa meeting in Kigali, Rwanda, will look at how the continent’s technology industry can help overcome its challenges.Rwanda’s capital, Kigali will host this year’s WEF Africa. (Image: Flickr, Lori Howe)Africa’s positive economic outlook is under pressure – mainly due to adverse changes in the global economy – and is expected to remain just below 5% in 2016.As many countries in the region improve their investment climate and undertake macroeconomic policy reforms, foreign direct investment flows are expected to continue to grow, although at a slower pace.Low global prices for major commodity exports, currency devaluations and debt sustainability considerations, as well as geosecurity threats that have weakened growth in some countries underscore the urgent need for economic diversification for sustained inclusive growth. In this context, Africa’s leaders need to pursue new approaches to ignite structural transformation, particularly in the face of rapid technological changes that have the potential to create new industries and reduce inequality.Under the theme Connecting Africa’s Resources through Digital Transformation, the 26th World Economic Forum on Africa, being held in Kigali, Rwanda, between 11-13 May, will bring together regional and global leaders from business, government and civil society. They will discuss digital economy catalysts that can drive radical structural transformation, strengthen public-private collaboration on key global and regional challenges, and agree on strategic actions that can deliver shared prosperity across the continent.Rwanda, the land of a thousand hills, has dramatically transformed since the 1994 genocide. The country is emerging as a regional high-tech hub and boasts one of sub-Saharan Africa’s fastest GDP growth rates. It is one of the continent’s most competitive economies and a top reformer in improving the business environment. This remarkable progress showcases the country’s rapid evolution as a knowledge economy, powered by smart policies and investments. Nonetheless, further reforms and alliances are called for to accelerate development by leveraging digital transformation to expand socio-economic opportunities.South Africa will be sending a delegation to Kigali for the conference. Travel Bug Rescue – Learn from a Pro

first_imgScott Stracener, Me2Ugly, rescuing a Travel Bug. Scott Stracener is geocacher Me2Ugly.  You may recognize his name if you’ve ever had a Travel Bug in need of rescue.  He’s currently ranked among the best of the best in Travel Bug rescue. Scott talked to us about how you can request assistance in rescuing your wayward Travel Bug or become a rescuer yourself.Latitude 47: How did you hear about Travel Bug rescue?Scott: I found out about TB Rescue through Geocaching.com.  I was just clicking around the site and saw a banner ad.  I clicked on the banner to get more information.  I thought that it was a great idea and a great way to get more involved with geocaching.  I know I would like someone to grab my Travel Bug or coin and move it along.  This gives us a way to help fellow cachers and to connect with others on a more personal note. The long road to rescue. Me2Ugly treks up a California road to rescue a Travel Bug. Latitude 47: What is your most gratifying recovery?Scott: Most gratifying rescue, there are two.  Obviously, my first successful rescue.  TB2ECQA ‘Geocoin Club June 2008’.  The coin was dropped on 11/4/2009. The owner requested a rescue on 3/12/2010, 128 days after the drop.  I saw the request on 3/15 and went out the next morning, hiked up Sugarloaf Mountain to retrieve the coin.  I then took it to the ‘Un-Original Stash’ in Oregon, which is where my most memorable TB Rescue took place.TB346VW ‘KC The Traveling Gorilla’, created by a mother for her son to watch the Travel Bug move from cache to cache.  KC was dropped on 1/31/10 and the mother requested a rescue on 4/21/10.  My investigation of the TB showed that it had only been active for two months and was already stuck.  I was going to be in the neighborhood (Un-Original Stash) so I [thought, “I] will stop by the last known cache for the Travel Bug.”  On 4/25/10, I found the cache and rescued the Travel Bug.  I had already decided that if I found the Travel Bug I would take it to the Project A.P.E. cache Mission 9: Tunnel of Light.  For the next month I kept KC The Traveling Gorilla and took him on a number of cache hunts, a Cache Rescue (which I do when requested through WSGA) and even a TB-Rescue on the Olympic Peninsula that was unsuccessful.  On 5/24/10, I dropped KC The Traveling Gorilla at Mission 9.  Then, when finishing the Geo TRIAD at HQ, I spotted KC there.  That was cool.Latitude 47: What advice do you have if someone is interested in Travel Bug rescue?Scott: Know the area where the rescue will take place.  No Travel Bug Rescue is worth risking yourself or property.  Have fun and remember that not all rescues can be successful.  However, when they are, it really feels great.Latitude 47: Have you ever lost a Travel Bug?Scott: I have not lost a Travel Bug.  I do not have that many out there.  I do know I will launch one on July 17th near Fort Casey on Whidbey Island, WA.  It will be my grandson’s second birthday.Share with your Friends:More SharePrint RelatedTrackable Stories of the WeekSeptember 16, 2011In “Community”Become Trackable on Geocaching.com – Tattoos to Travel BugsSeptember 13, 2011In “Community”Nottingham to Nottingham Travel Bug RaceSeptember 12, 2011In “Community”last_img read more

“No Timeframe” for Playstation Network Return After Hack

first_imgdan rowinski 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout Tags:#gaming#security#web 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People…center_img The Sony Playstation Network hack that has plagued the video game platform since April 20 has forced the company to shutdown the service indefinitely while it works to rebuild the platform. The Playstation blog, a space normally used for gaming updates, tips and anecdotes, has been updating the status of the network about once a day since the initial attack brought down the platform last week. It said April 25 that the company does not have a timeframe for when the service will again be available.“I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online. Unfortunately, I don’t have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time,” wrote Patrick Seybold, senior director for communications and social media at Playstation. The company acknowledged the hack April 22 in a post stating that an “external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th.”Seybold wrote that the Playstation Network is “re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure.” That suggest that the intrusion is not a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack but a more sophisticated hook into the system.International hacker group Anonymous, which has taken down websites large and small with DDoS attacks according to its political agenda, has denied responsibility for the attack. In a post on its message boards, Anonymous said “for once we didn’t do it.”Note: Unedited from the original Anonymous message, typos and all.Sony’s Playstation Network, its online service for Playstation 3 and its Playstation Portable consoles, suffered from a major outage today; which is on going as of this writting. According to Son’ys blog, the interruption in service may last into the long weekend – for at least another “full day or two”. Sony released a statement through its EU blog, saying that the network outage may be a result of “targeted behaviour by an outside party”, brining in the possibility of cyberattacks. Adding to the confusion is the fact that the message has since been removed. While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps wa not related to this incident and takes no responsiblity for it. A more likely explination is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous’ previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is accutally an internal problem with the companies servers.Sony is incompetent.Anonymous had originally been upset with Sony over its decision to sue hacker George Hotz after he jailbroke the Playstation 3. Sony and Hotz settled the case earlier this month. The Playstation Network has upwards of 70 million members and has been around since 2006. It allows users to play multi-player games online, rent videos and games, watch Netflix movies, instant message and chat. Correction: Qriocity is an online European music service, not the European version of PSN as previously reported. 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App Related Posts last_img read more

Build Your Own Butt/Pedestal Dolly for under $140

first_imgAdd this versatile tool to your next shoot for hundreds less than retail. There’s a long history of tinkerers in the film business. In fact, most of the grip equipment we use today started as garage prototypes, built out of necessity by some handy guy. Walk onto any well-equipped grip truck, and you’ll find some homemade gadget that is a one-off item built specifically for an ambitious shot. Every film project I’ve worked on has required some rig or jig not found anywhere else in the industry. Challenging these self-taught engineers is fun, and more often than not, they come up with something that works really wellI certainly don’t have all the tools to fabricate something elaborate, but every now and then I come up with something that works, and I use it constantly. With these three inexpensive items, you can construct a dolly that is in wide use today. We used this this dolly every day on my last production and got some great shots very quickly. It can function as a camera pedestal dolly for low shots, but we mainly sat an operator on the seat with a handheld camera for great low-angle shots — while silently scooting around the set to follow the action.Necessary EquipmentThe bar stool seat was surprising cheap — $15. The adjustable boat seat pedestal cost $33 and is available at Bass Pro Shop. The “Down Under” plant caddy is a wheeled platform meant for rolling big, heavy pots around — $31.The biggest additional expense was changing out the plastic wheels that came with the plant caddy for soft, quiet skate wheels (available from “Coolcasters” — $9). If you want, you can spend way more for high-end, in-line skate wheels. I had the aluminum plates made for looks and a little more rigidity. Plates are totally optional.AssemblyThere isn’t anything complicated about putting these pieces together. The ½” plywood “washer” is the only the part that needs to be cut and pre-drilled; the pedestal plate itself made for a wonderful template. I made a similar plate for attaching the fluid head to the pedestal when you remove the seat. This dolly works great, is easy to put together, and costs hundreds less than similar units available online. Expand your grip tools with this versatile and customizable piece.Do you know other DIY gear hacks? Let us know in the comments.last_img read more

Lokpal: Differences can be resolved through talks, says Anna Hazare

first_imgAmid a war of words between government and civil society members over Lokpal Bill, both sides will meet in New Delhi on Wednesday for its drafting even as Anna Hazare reminded the ministers that differences could be resolved through dialogue and not through confrontation. As the government and Congress continued its attack on the civil society members, Hazare said he cannot force anyone not to level allegations like he was a mask of RSS or BJP by putting a hand on their mouth, but said the civil society has every right to raise issues. The activists, who have shot off letters to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, will push for the inclusion of Prime Minister, judiciary and MPs under the ambit of the Lokpal, an issue on which government is at loggerheads with the civil society.”Differences can be resolved through talks but not through confrontation. We feel that the government has accepted some of our demands and a lot more needs to be done. There is time till June 30,” he told reporters here. “If nothing happens, we will see then,” he added. He said the civil society will put forth their views during Wednesday’s meeting and if their demands were not met, then they will start their agitation again. The last meeting on June 6 was boycotted by the civil society side to protest police crackdown on Ramdev’s protest. Congress has called Hazare an “unelected tyrant” while the civil society has taken exception to Mukherjee’s remarks that they were undermining democracy.advertisementAsked about allegations that he was associated with RSS and BJP, Hazare said, “how can I put hand on their mouth (and prevent them from making allegations)? In my lifetime, I have never gone close to any political party. Every party is similar. Some are graduates in corruption while some others have got doctorates in corruption.”Queried whether he considered BJP a corrupt party, he evaded direct reply and said, “why should I say, you people know.”On Congress’ allegation that the civil society was undermining democracy, he said the civil society has become the masters of the country when it turned republic.Emphasising that the government has to listen to people’s opinion, he said there was nothing wrong in civil society highlighting issues as the government is a representative of the citizens and are answerable.”We do not deny that Parliament is a big institution. But Parliament is not in Delhi alone. Have a look at the Constitution. The village parliament is bigger than the Parliament in Delhi. Nobody thinks about it. Who has send them to Parliament?” he said.Hazare also said there is so much corruption. “People in the government act like kings. That’s why people should reflect on what Congress leader Digvijay Singh said about bringing the Prime Minister under the ambit of the Lokpal Bill. It is noy just Anna Hazare’s question,” he said.Asked why they were not pulling out the drafting commitee as there was so much of mistrust, Kejriwal said they have to work with this. “At least, we can put on record our dissent note,” he said. For more news on India, click here. Video: 2 High School Football Players Speared A Referee On Purpose

first_imgThree footballs next to a pylon(Photo by Streeter Lecka/Getty Images)Two high school football players are in some serious trouble, if we’re to believe that what you see in the below video was done on purpose.According to Deadspin, during a game between Marble Falls and San Antonio John Jay on Friday night, two high school defensive backs (who play for John Jay) targeted an official during live play. One speared him, just before the other dove into him, helmet-first. It’s one of the most ridiculous videos you’ll ever see.The title of the video suggests that it was in retaliation for a “bad call.” If that’s the case, this is reprehensible. Both players were ejected from the contest, and the district is investigating the play.last_img
