India vs England: Nasser Hussain, Sourav Ganguly slam MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav over lack of intent

first_imgIndia lost to England by 31 runs in their maiden defeat of the World Cup 2019 on Sunday at Edgbaston. Even though Rohit Sharma hit a splendid century and Virat Kohli hit his 5th successive World Cup 50, India still fell short of the 338-run target. But the aspect that was most baffling about the nature of the Indian defeat was the fact that MS Dhoni and Kedar Jadhav couldn’t find the boundary in the end overs when the team needed them the most and kept on taking singles nonchalantly.Dhoni finished with 42 off 31 balls while Jadhav remained unbeaten on 12(13). Commentators Sourav Ganguly and Nasser Hussain who were on air during the last phase of the innings were baffled by the duo’s appraoach of being satisfied with singles and not going for the big shots.”I am completely baffled. What’s going on! This is not what India needed. They need runs. What are they doing? Some Indian fans are leaving now. Surely they must want to see Dhoni go for his shots, even if he slogs it off in the air. It’s a World Cup game, top 2 sides, give it a go! Indian fans would want their side to do a little bit more. They want their side to go down with a fight. Risk it to win it,” said Hussain during the last 10 overs of India’s chase.Ganguly too seemed surprised by India’s approach and said that having 5 wickets in hand and still ending up playijng dots was strange.”I don’t have an explanation for that. You asked me the question but I can’t explain these singles. It’s also the length and the bounce that has deceived the Indian batsmen. You can’t be chasing 338 and still have 5 wickets in the end. It’s about mindset and the way you look at the game. The message had to be clear: no matter where it comes and no matter where the ball lands you have to find the boundary. A dot ball at this stage!,” said Ganguly.advertisementEven after the match, Ganguly told host host broadcaster Star Sports that the intent especially in the first 10 and last 6 overs was lacking from the Indian duo of Dhoni and Jadhav.”The first 10 overs and the last 6 overs left a lot to be desired. Hopefully they will go back and reflect because they have been in excellent form this WC. The intent was not good enough. I would have been more happy if India were 300 all-out. This situation can happen again and they will have to find different ways to succeed in the first and last 10 overs,” said Ganguly. In essence, India lost just 1 wicket in the last 10 overs while scoring just 72 runs. Social media was also abuzz with the slow appraoch from the Indian duo and many criticized Dhoni and Jadhav for the uncharacteristic end to the Indian innings. Here is a glimpse:Disappointing finish. A run-a-ball partnership can’t win games. Was exciting till Pandya was in.Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) June 30, 2019Last 10 overs 72 /1. Would have been happier with 290 all out than 306/5. So important to analyse stats n not take them on face value.
