Perdue confirmation hearing held

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest The Senate Agriculture Committee held a hearing yesterday on the nomination of Sonny Perdue as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.“Today, Governor Perdue promised to be a ‘strong and tenacious advocate’ for America’s farmers and ranchers and ‘USDA’s chief salesman around the world.’ We could not agree more on the need for strong leadership at USDA, especially when it comes to trade. Governor Perdue pledged to work closely with the rest of the Administration to negotiate strong trade deals that benefit America’s farmers and ranchers. We also appreciate his commitment to a strong Renewable Fuel Standard,” said the National Corn Growers Association in a statement. “USDA has been without a Secretary for more than two months, at a time when there is much work to do. NCGA stands ready to work with Governor Perdue and the rest of the Trump Administration to support strong trade policy, continue investing in renewable fuels, protecting risk management programs, and preparing for the next farm bill. We urge the Senate to confirm him as soon as possible.”last_img read more

Deadline extended: Enroll by June 22 for new dairy program

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest  Leave a CommentUPDATE: USDA has extended the deadline for dairy producers to sign up for the Farm Service Agency’s Margin Protection Program – Dairy (MPP) through Friday, June 22. All dairy operations must make new coverage elections for 2018, even if the operation was enrolled during the previous 2018 signup period that ended in December 2017. Coverage elections made for 2018 will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2018.PREVIOUSLY: Dairy farmers are being encouraged to enroll in the new and improved Margin Protection Program for Dairy now through June 1. MPP-Dairy changes authorized under the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 will provide better protections for producers from shifting milk and feed prices, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It also is retroactive to cover all of 2018.Key changes to the new MPP-Dairy program include:Improving the ability for dairy farmers to use the Livestock Gross Margin (LGM-Dairy) program and other insurance options offered through USDAAdjusting the first tier of covered production to include each farm’s first 5 million pounds of annual milk production (about 217 cows) instead of 4 million poundsRaising the catastrophic coverage level from $4 to $5 for the first tier of covered production for all dairy farmersReducing the premium rates for the first 5 million pounds of production for more affordable coverageChanging the margin calculation from a bi-monthly to a monthly basisWaiving the annual $100 administrative fee for under-served farmers“We encourage dairy producers to review the provisions of the updated program, which Congress shaped with their feedback,” said USDA Sec. Sonny Perdue.John Newton, American Farm Bureau market intelligence director, said that the new MPP is a better safety net for dairy farmers than the previous one, largely because the catastrophic coverage level has increased from 4 to 5 million pounds and the program triggers monthly, instead of every two months.“Combined, it makes the program much more affordable and timelier in terms of delivering program payments to dairy farmers,” he said.Determining coverage levelsUSDA has a web tool to help producers determine the level of coverage under the MPP-Dairy that will provide them with the strongest safety net under a variety of conditions. The online resource allows dairy farmers to quickly and easily combine unique operation data and other key variables to calculate their coverage needs based on price projections. Producers can also review historical data or estimate future coverage based on data projections. The secure site can be accessed via computer, smartphone, tablet or any other platform.  Leave a Commentlast_img read more

Weekend Project: Install Web Apps in Chrome or Chromium

first_imgTop Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting sarah perez Before you get started, you’ll need to install a developer build of Google Chrome or its open-source counterpart, Chromium. I prefer using Chromium for this sort of project because it allows me to play around while still keeping my default Chrome install a separate, stable version. Step 1: Grab a Developer Build or Chromium BuildTo use a developer build of Google Chrome, go to this page and scroll down to the section called “Subscribing to a channel.” From here, pick the “Dev Channel” for your current OS: Windows, Mac or Linux. Just click the appropriate link to run the installer and launch the browser. Google says: “When Google Chrome users ‘install’ a Web application from the store, a convenient shortcut is added for quickly accessing the app. Installed Web apps can also request advanced HTML5 permissions.” Those HTML5 features can include things like local data storage for faster and offline use of apps and running apps in full-screen mode.If you would prefer to use Chromium, you’ll need to head over to this site instead: build.chromium.org/buildbot/snapshots. On this page, you’ll find folders instead of direct links, each labeled by OS. Click the link for your OS (Linux, Linux-64, Mac or XP -that’s for all Windows users, by the way). Within each folder, you’ll notice a list of build numbers accompanied by a “last modified” date. To get the most recent one, scroll to the bottom of the page and click through to the files listed. Here, grab the installer for your OS; for example, Windows users would download “mini_installer.exe”. Run the installer and launch the browser. Step 2: Edit the ShortcutNext, you’ll need to edit the desktop shortcut for the newly installed browser in order to add the command line flag that enables Web apps. In Windows, right-click on the desktop shortcut, click “Properties,” then place your cursor at the end of the line in the “Target” field. Add a space then type –enable-apps in this field. Click the “OK” button and restart the browser. In Mac, it’s $ open /Applications/Google Chrome.app –args -enable-apps.Note: for more help with startup switches, check out LifeHacker’s guide.Step 3: Install the ExtensionsNow, in Chrome/Chromium go to chrome://extensions, click “Developer Mode” then click “Load Unpacked Extension.” In the window that appears, you’ll need to browse to Chrome’s resources folder. (In Windows, you’ll find it at:(If you’re using Chromium, just look for the “Chromium” folder, not “Chrome.”)For current versions of Windows (Vista/7): %userprofile%AppDataLocalGoogleChromeApplication[Version]resourcesFor Windows XP users: %userprofile%Local SettingsApplication DataGoogleChromeApplication[Version]resourcesOnce you’ve navigated to the appropriate folder, you’ll notice there are three subfolders: gmail_app, calendar_app and docs_app. Click the folder for the app you want to install and it will now appear in the extensions list in Chrome/Chromium. Step 4: Load the Web Apps!OK, here comes the fun part: loading the Web apps themselves. Click the “New Tab” button in Chrome/Chromium like you were about to launch a new Web page and you’ll now see the available Web apps listed. Click the app’s icon to load it into the browser. Once the app is installed, it appears with a large icon that hovers a bit above the tab. There are three official Google Web apps already available for testing – Gmail, Calendar and Google Docs. Plus, there are a handful of third-party apps available now, including music apps, Twitter apps, Facebook, games and more. A few of the popular ones are conveniently listed here, for example. To load other Web apps, like those featured here, you have to first download the .crx file to your computer then open it using Chrome/Chromium. You can find more apps to try by browsing through the discussion group for Chromium apps here. Plus, there are even more apps posted here and here, too. Have fun!last_img read more

Steve Blank’s Lean Startup Model: Not Just For Startups Any More

first_imgRelated Posts What Nobody Teaches You About Getting Your Star… rieva lesonsky How to Get Started in China and Have Success China and America want the AI Prize Title: Who …center_img How OKR’s Completely Transformed Our Culture Tags:#enterprise#innovation#startup The lean startup – as envisioned and explained by Steve Blank, serial entrepreneur, associate professor at Stanford University and ReadWrite contributor – is no longer just for startups. “Companies are facing continuous disruption. Business-as-usual is not a credible response,” Blank writes in the cover story of the May issue of the Harvard Business Review: Why the Lean Startup Changes EverythingThis is a big deal. For years, HBR and most of the country’s leading business schools taught entrepreneurship as if the strategies, processes and techniques were some sort of amputated versions of the business models embraced by “real companies.” This no longer the case – the lean startup concept is being embraced by companies large and small, and is now taught at business schools globally.Keep Failing Fast Til You SucceedThe principles of the lean startup – failing fast and continually iterating and learning – certainly pose a challenge to traditional processes at corporate behemoths – but Blank argues that adopting the lean startup model is now “essential for the survival of business.”As Blank writes in HBR, “It’s already becoming clear that lean start-up practices are not just for young tech ventures.” Those tools now embraced by startups searching for new business models “also happen to have arrived just in time to help existing companies deal with the forces of continual disruption. In the 21st century those forces will make people in every kind of organization — start-ups, small businesses, corporations, and government — feel the pressure of rapid change.”“The pattern is the same,” Blank added in an interview, only “the scale is different.”“The world has changed. The rules that worked in the 1990s no longer work. It’s now a world of disruption.” Big businesses, Blank said, became so “focused on execution, they forgot how to innovate.”The Evolution Of The Lean StartupThe lean startup model is not new. Blank first started piecing together the concept in 2000 and created The Four Steps to the Epiphany in 2003. (The book was published in 2005.) The Startup Owner’s Manual was published in 2012.Blank’s revelation — that large companies execute while startups “search” — was the key to articulating the difference between big and small businesses. Blank recalls realizing there were “plenty of tools for execution, but no tools for search.” Ideally startups would be searching for answers, seeking the repeatable business model, finding out what’s salable.A few years later Blank was teaching agile engineering, which is the idea that “instead of building a product in one lump sum, people build it in increments.” One of his students, Eric Ries, later wrote a book about the concept and named it The Lean Startup. The final piece was to create a framework “to keep score.”The Evolution Of BusinessIn his HBR article, Blank predicts applying the lean start-up approach will help existing businesses “innovate rapidly and transform business as we know it.” Lean startup, he writes, is “a new strategy for the 21st-century corporation.”In our interview, he added the lean startup is now about “continuous innovation inside existing companies.” It’s all part of the evolution of business, Blank explained: “Never underestimate [the impact] of stepping out of the box. Think different. Ask, ‘Why is this different?’ ”The (Limited) Role Of Big DataLike almost everyone else these days, Blank had something to say about the important of Big Data: “It’s not just about collecting the data, it’s about having insight into the data you collect, about making connections from the data.”But Big Data analysis doesn’t spell the end of the time-honored business precept of going with your gut, Blank said. Rather he believes using the data to make better decisions is what makes a company “explosive.”Adding Big Data insights to business vision is the key: “Entrepreneurship will never be formulaic. Entrepreneurs see things other people don’t. They’re artists.” For example, he concluded, “Steve Jobs represented the best intersection of art and science.”Risk = Not Getting Your Hands DirtyIn the end, Blank believes companies get into trouble when they “fail to understand what customers want.” It’s easier to avoid failure if you “build a customer-centric business,” Blank said. “You need to get your hands dirty,” he said.Thats why Blank warned companies to stop chasing “the romance” — the way you think things are, and start pursuing “the realities” — the way things actually are.Steve Blank image from a 2012 Stanford Business School Interview on YouTube.last_img read more
