Skype Video Coming to Android, Is 2010 the Year of Mobile Video Chat?

first_imgThe fast-growing population of Android users will soon be able to chat face-to-face thanks to a Skype mobile application that will hit the marketplace with video functionality “later this year.” As reported on the gadget blog Skatter Tech, Skype representatives have been quoted confirming the release of a carrier-independent app that will allow users to use voice and video to chat on their Android devices. This is a giant step forward for Android users who were disappointed to learn earlier this year that Skype’s initial offerings on the platform were restricted to Verizon’s 3G network.“We’re betting big on video, and we intend to set the bar on mobile video calling, and it’s something we’re going to do this year,” said Skype PR representative Brianna Reynaud. “We will be bringing a direct to consumer app to the Android marketplace later this year. This application will be available for all consumers globally to download regardless of carriers.” Though it remains to be seen if any other restrictions or limitations will be placed on the app, this news is certainly exciting to Android users. The announcement also comes amidst speculation that Apple’s forthcoming refreshed iPhone will feature a forward-facing camera for video calls. Whether Skype is also working with Apple to launch an iPhone application this year is unknown, and some have suggested that Apple may reserve the functionality for a native iChat application. Either way, a new dawn of mobile video chatting seems to be upon us. The question is, however, will people actually take to this new form of communication? In 1993, AT&T ran a series of commercials suggesting the breakthrough technologies the company hoped to bring to its customers in the future. The ads include technologies prevalent today, including e-readers, in-car GPS, tablet PCs and even automated toll booth systems like EZ Pass. One innovation featured in the ads that has yet to take off significantly is the idea of video replacing standard phone communication.Skype chat on the desktop and enterprise video conferencing solutions have become popular in recent years, but they haven’t gone gangbusters and replaced the way we communicate all together. In fact, in the same interview with Skatter Tech, Reynaud said that only one-third of Skype calls are video calls, so the majority of users are simply using the voice functionality. Tags:#mobile#web chris cameron What it Takes to Build a Highly Secure FinTech … This is not to say that video-calls on a mobile device shouldn’t have a place in our current technological ecosystem. Video chatting on a phone could be great for special situations, like when a group of friends are getting together and they call up an absent friend and pass the phone around the room. It’s going to take some time for the novelty of mobile video chat to ware off before it finds itself being used more and more as a common means of communication. We as humans, for better or for worse, have evolved into incredible multi-taskers. We listen to music, watch videos, read stories, check email, update our social status – sometimes all at the same time. Video chatting, from my experience, does not fit in well with a multi-tasker’s mindset. Think of all the things we do while talking on the phone – driving our cars, eating, doing laundry, etc. Now think of trying to do anything else while video chatting; it’s nearly impossible because it requires the majority of your attention. Will mobile video chatting take off? That still remains to be seen; however, regardless of these assertions, it is good to see Skype expanding its mobile platform to more carriers and devices. I only hope as an iPhone user that video chat from Skype finds its way onto my device sometime soon as well. “No Timeframe” for Playstation Network Return After Hack

first_imgdan rowinski 9 Books That Make Perfect Gifts for Industry Ex… 5 Outdoor Activities for Beating Office Burnout Tags:#gaming#security#web 12 Unique Gifts for the Hard-to-Shop-for People…center_img The Sony Playstation Network hack that has plagued the video game platform since April 20 has forced the company to shutdown the service indefinitely while it works to rebuild the platform. The Playstation blog, a space normally used for gaming updates, tips and anecdotes, has been updating the status of the network about once a day since the initial attack brought down the platform last week. It said April 25 that the company does not have a timeframe for when the service will again be available.“I know you are waiting for additional information on when PlayStation Network and Qriocity services will be online. Unfortunately, I don’t have an update or timeframe to share at this point in time,” wrote Patrick Seybold, senior director for communications and social media at Playstation. The company acknowledged the hack April 22 in a post stating that an “external intrusion on our system has affected our PlayStation Network and Qriocity services. In order to conduct a thorough investigation and to verify the smooth and secure operation of our network services going forward, we turned off PlayStation Network & Qriocity services on the evening of Wednesday, April 20th.”Seybold wrote that the Playstation Network is “re-building our system to further strengthen our network infrastructure.” That suggest that the intrusion is not a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack but a more sophisticated hook into the system.International hacker group Anonymous, which has taken down websites large and small with DDoS attacks according to its political agenda, has denied responsibility for the attack. In a post on its message boards, Anonymous said “for once we didn’t do it.”Note: Unedited from the original Anonymous message, typos and all.Sony’s Playstation Network, its online service for Playstation 3 and its Playstation Portable consoles, suffered from a major outage today; which is on going as of this writting. According to Son’ys blog, the interruption in service may last into the long weekend – for at least another “full day or two”. Sony released a statement through its EU blog, saying that the network outage may be a result of “targeted behaviour by an outside party”, brining in the possibility of cyberattacks. Adding to the confusion is the fact that the message has since been removed. While it could be the case that other Anons have acted by themselves AnonOps wa not related to this incident and takes no responsiblity for it. A more likely explination is that Sony is taking advantage of Anonymous’ previous ill-will towards the company to distract users from the fact the outage is accutally an internal problem with the companies servers.Sony is incompetent.Anonymous had originally been upset with Sony over its decision to sue hacker George Hotz after he jailbroke the Playstation 3. Sony and Hotz settled the case earlier this month. The Playstation Network has upwards of 70 million members and has been around since 2006. It allows users to play multi-player games online, rent videos and games, watch Netflix movies, instant message and chat. Correction: Qriocity is an online European music service, not the European version of PSN as previously reported. 4 Keys to a Kid-Safe App Related Posts last_img read more

Big hearts, sharp minds bowl over India’s Italian boxing coach

first_imgPublished on SHARE SHARE SHARE EMAIL × sport Left thoroughly “confused” by the sheer enormity of India at first, the country’s first foreign coach for women youth boxers, Raffaele Bergamasco, says the “big hearts” and “sharp minds” of his wards have only added to his astonishment three months into the job.Bergamasco, who has coached the Italian youth and senior teams of both men and women, took up the Indian offer in July this year.“From 2001 to 2007, I was coaching the elite women’s Italian team. From 2008 to 2016, I coached men — youth and elite — for Italy. I have participated (as a coach) in three Olympics — Beijing, London, Rio,” Bergamasco told PTI in an interview here.Bergamasco’s trial by fire starts at this month’s Youth World Championships for women, scheduled from November 19 in Guwahati.Asked to speak of his India experience so far, Bergamasco spoke fondly of the roller-coaster ride, which also included learning English and Hindi to add to the fluent Italian he is accustomed to.“Being in India has been very very enjoyable. The first day I came here, it was very confusing. It’s a very big country with a lot of people but after two days, I fell in love with India.“I have been studying English for five days a week otherwise it would have been very difficult for me. I have to speak to so many people all the time in the camp, so it was important for me,” he explained.“I have also learnt some Hindi. I can say ‘namaste’, ’namaskaar’, ‘aap kaise ho? (How are you),” he said grinning.Bergamasco, under whose tutelage the Italian boxers have gone on to win world and European level medals, said he foresees a bright future for India.“India is a very strong boxing nation because of two qualities which I did not see in my Italian boxers. A big big heart, and a very sharp mind. They have to work a little bit on the technical aspects such as coordination,” he said.“India’s future is very bright. Boxing will be very big in India. The boxers in India have what it takes to get an Olympic gold medal,” he predicted.Bergamasco was also full of praise for the Indian coaches who are working with him, including chief coach Bhaskar Bhatt.“I can only say thank you to the Indian coaches who are working with me. They are a very good team, they helped me in picking up English. Step by step I think, we are getting in sync in planning,” he said.Asked what the aspects he wants to improve in Indian boxing, Bergamasco said, “They have to change diet, change timing to ensure that every aspect of training is compartmentalised. They are adapting slowly although. I know it has been difficult for them.” November 07, 2017 COMMENT COMMENTSlast_img read more
