News story: Over £15 million of funding sourced for small business

first_imgOne of the biggest challenges for a growing small business is securing credit. Small businesses are the backbone of Britain, yet many give up on their plans to expand if they can’t get a loan from their bank. Now however, thanks to our match-making scheme, they have another shot. That’s why we’re pleased to provide ongoing support for the government’s Bank Referral Scheme, which is enabling an increasing number of smaller businesses to explore additional options if they are unsuccessful in their original application. The Scheme was launched in November 2016 in response to evidence which suggested that small and medium-sized businesses simply gave up, rather than seek alternative options, if turned down for a loan by their bank.Rejected businesses are now automatically offered the opportunity to be referred to three online credit brokers: Alternative Business Funding, Funding Options and Funding Xchange. Each platform provides access to a range of lenders and products, including business loans, revolving credit, asset finance and invoice finance.Loans resulting from the scheme ranged from £100 to £1.3 million. The average size of a loan secured was £17,285.Alice Hu-Wagner, Managing Director for Strategy, Economics and Business Development at the British Business Bank said, One of our key objectives at the British Business Bank is to encourage and enable smaller UK businesses to seek the finance best suited to their needs. Just over half of smaller businesses consider only one provider when they need funding, however, with over a quarter putting their plans on hold or giving up altogether if they aren’t offered the full amount they were seeking. From breweries to beauticians, more than 900 British businesses have been matched with the funding they need to grow since we introduced our scheme. Small businesses turned down for loans from the UK’s high-street banks have received over £15 million of funding thanks to a government matchmaking scheme.Over the past 12 months, 670 businesses have raised over £12 million of funding through the Bank Referral Scheme, four times what was raised in the previous year. Since it was introduced in November 2016, more than £15 million has been sourced for businesses across the country. The Bank Referral Scheme requires Britain’s biggest banks to pass on the details of small businesses they have turned down for loans to online credit brokers. The brokers then help those businesses to source funding from alternative, and often smaller, lenders.John Glen, Economic Secretary to the Treasury said: Thanks to government scheme over £15 million has been found for businesses who were rejected for finance by their bank. The amount of funding secured through the scheme has quadrupled since last year.last_img read more

Rare astronomical phenomenon visible Sunday night, weather permitting

first_imgMoon Enters Umbra—6:34p7:34p8:34p9:34p10:34p Moon Leaves Umbra8:51p9:51p10:51p11:51p12:51a1:51a Batesville, In. — On Sunday night into Monday morning, January 20-21, 2019, a spectacular total lunar eclipse will occur. Weather permitting, totality will be particularly dramatic over North America, where January’s full Wolf Moon will glow an eerie coppery hue high in the dark and crisp winter sky.A total lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth passes between the Sun and Moon, and lines up precisely so that it completely blocks the Sun’s light, which otherwise reflects off the Moon. A lunar eclipse can occur only when there is a full Moon.Totality—the time the Moon will spend in the Earth’s shadow— will last 1 hour and 2 minutes. The eclipse will begin when the Moon enters the faint outer portion (called the penumbra) of the Earth’s shadow about an hour before it begins moving into the umbra. The penumbra, however, is all but invisible to the eye until the Moon becomes deeply immersed in it. Sharp-eyed viewers may get their first glimpse of the penumbra as a faint “smudge” on the left part of the Moon’s disk about a half hour after it first enters the penumbral shadow. See Eclipse Timetable, below. The most noticeable part of this lunar eclipse will come when the Moon begins to enter the Earth’s dark inner shadow (called the umbra). A small scallop of darkness will begin to appear on the Moon’s left edge shortly after it has begun to enter the umbra.Eclipse watchers from the Hawaiian Islands will see a different—but still stirring—spectacle: the eclipse will already be in progress when the Moon rises at sunset, with roughly half of the Moon already immersed in shadow. As evening twilight deepens and the Moon gradually becomes more and more immersed in the Earth’s shadow, it will become transformed into a ruddy, ghostly orb.During a lunar eclipse, the Moon can sometimes turn red. The light reaching the Moon resembles the “color of blood,” and is sometimes called a “Blood Moon” which can be a bit unsettling. But the explanation is simple:“During a total lunar eclipse, white sunlight hitting the atmosphere on the sides of the Earth gets absorbed and then radiated out (scattered). Blue-colored light is most affected,” NASA officials wrote online. “That is, the atmosphere filters out (scatters away) most of the blue-colored light. What’s left over is the orange- and red-colored light.”January 20-21 Total Lunar Eclipse Timetable Mid-Eclipse7:13p8:13p9:13p10:13p11:13p12:13a Total Eclipse Ends7:43p8:43p9:43p10:43p11:43p12:43a HISTAKSTPSTMSTCSTESTcenter_img While the Farmers’ Almanac is mostly known for its advance weather forecasts, it has also been an important astronomy resource for over two centuries, including eclipses and full Moons. For more information, visit www.FarmersAlmanac.com. The day-night Test will be the first in the three-match series, and West Indies will play a day-night tour match against PCB Patrons XI between October 7 and 9 in Sharjah to prepare for the first Test. The second and third Tests will be held in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, from October 21 and October 30 respectively. In June, an initially reluctant WICB had agreed in principle to play a day-night Test in the UAE, following the PCB’s offer of a practice match and training sessions under lights. Pakistan are also scheduled to play a second day-night Test in the 2016-17 season, against Australia in Brisbane from December 15.Apart from the day-night tour game, West Indies are scheduled to play two tour matches – a T20 and a two-day game – against an ECB XI. Both matches will be held at the ICC Academy in Dubai. The PCB had also mulled hosting West Indies in Sri Lanka to counter the growing expenses in the UAE, who have been hosts to Pakistan’s home series for a decade now. The idea, however, was dropped after assessing the drawbacks of playing in Sri Lanka during the monsoon. (ESPN Cricinfo)last_img read more

James Harden, Rockets overwhelm lowly Cavaliers

first_imgIt’s Harden’s 15th straight game with at least 30 points, his franchise-record 13th game with 40 points this season and the seventh in the last nine games as he has carried the team with Chris Paul and Eric Gordon out with injuries.Ante Zizic came off the bench to score 18 for the Cavaliers, whose season-long skid extended to 12 games.“We just couldn’t stop them,” Cavaliers coach Larry Drew said. “They were raining 3s all over the place. They broke us down off the dribble. They are in a rhythm now and playing very good basketball.”Harden needed less than 2 1/2 quarters to reach 30 points on Friday night, hitting a 3 with 7:41 left in the third to give him 32 points and push Houston’s lead 91-58. He joins Kobe Bryant (16 games in 2003) as the only players to score 30 points in at least 15 games in a row since the 1972-73 season.About three minutes later, he pushed his total to 40 after he was left wide open to drive into the lane for an easy layup to make it 99-68. Harden grabbed his 10th rebound with about 90 seconds left in the third quarter to give him his sixth triple-double this season and the 41st of his career.ADVERTISEMENT Later, Harden was asked if Tucker deserves dinner for helping him get his triple-double.“I took P.J. to dinner, movies, Europe,” Harden said laughing. “I take P.J. everywhere with me. He gets enough already.”UP NEXTCavaliers: Visit Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.Rockets: Visit Orlando on Sunday.Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next MOST READ Harden played just 29 minutes and 34 seconds, and made eight 3-pointers to extend his NBA record to 12 games in a row with at least five.“The step-back 3s, he’s perfected that,” coach Mike D’Antoni said. “He’s got 16 3s and they’re all step-backs. I don’t know how he does it … everybody knows what he’s doing and he still gets them off, and they’re kind of open. They’re not forced, so he’s just an incredible player.”Clint Capela added 19 points on 7-of-8 shooting after making just four of 16 field goals in a loss to Milwaukee on Wednesday night.Harden and fellow starters Capela and Tucker also sat out the fourth quarter with Houston up 113-81 entering the fourth. Even with the trio watching the final quarter from the bench, the Rockets maintained a huge lead and their 141 points were a season high and the most Cleveland has allowed this season.TIP-INSCavaliers: Rodney Hood returned after missing the last three games with a sore left Achilles tendon. He had six points, two assists and two rebounds in 18 minutes. … Cedi Osman had 15 points and Collin Sexton added 14. … Jordan Clarkson and Jalen Jones added 12 points each.Rockets: Paul missed his 10th game in a row with a strained left hamstring. … Gordon missed his sixth straight game with a bruised right knee. … It’s the sixth time this season Houston has scored 70 points or more in the first half.DATE NIGHT?Tucker boxed out a couple of Cavaliers and avoided grabbing the ball to help Harden collect his 10th rebound on Friday night.
