On a weekend of limited sporting action the surface at the Letterkenny venue was in excellent shape.Credit is due to the Rovers groundstaff and the home side will have been delighted at the game going ahead especially when one considers they travel for an intermediate cup tie next Sunday and ensure any ring rustiness from previous postponements do not become an issue. Letterkenny dominated possession throughout and took the game to the visitors from the start and had half chances through a Terence Shiels header and a Paul McVeigh free kick but the game really sprung into life on 21 minutes.A long ball over the top from Ryan Lonergan fell into the path of Jonny Bonner who had slipped his marker Dylan Hegarty but Hegarty appeared to pull the former Harps man back and referee Marty McGarrigle awarded the spot kick and also showed the Swilly man a straight red.Swilly may have thought their luck was in when Bonners spotkick came off the post before Gareth Wade made a fine save from Darren McElwaines effort on the rebound. That was only a temporary reprieve though as Kevin McGrath and McElwaine both saw efforts well stopped by Wade before Letterkenny did take a deserved lead on 33 minutes. Tommy Bonners quick free kick found Jonny Bonner and he worked a neat one -two before a cushioned pass fell to McElwaine and the ace marksman made no mistake this time slotting low past Wade.Manager Eamon McConigley will have been disappointed his side were only 1 up as despite dominating possession they couldnt kill the game off but he need not have worried as the insurance goal came on 53 minutes and what a goal it was.Tristan Ferris had a goalbound effort which fell into the path of Jonny Bonner and his 20 yard effort with dip and pace flew past the Swilly keeper.James McCahill had a half chance to get one back but his effort was well gathered by rovers netminder and debutante Lee Boyle – and Boyle had a reasonably comfortable afternoon in a defence which was well marshalled by fellow Rosses man Paul Boyle and Tristan Ferris who were in no mood to offer up any easy chances. In truth the home side wasted a succession of chances with McElwaine, Jonny Bonner and Dean Bonner culpable but two goals on 78 and 80 minutes through Paul McVeigh and McElwaine completed the scoring. McVeigh fired home from a Johnny Bonner throughball to cooly slot home while McElwaine got in on the end of a superb cross from substitute Kevin O’Donnell to finish the scoring. The game wasnt helped by the early sending off and it made life very difficult for Swilly but credit to Letterkenny who tried to play some good football and they will be in good heart heading to Dunboyne next Sunday.Letterkenny Rovers; Lee Boyle, Ryan Lonergan, Dean Bonner, Paul Boyle, Tristan Ferris, Terence Shiels, Paul McVeigh, Tommy Bonnar, Darren McElaine, Johnny Bonnar, Kevin McGrathSubs; Anthony Gorman for Lonergan 65 mins, Kevin O’Donnell for Ferris 79 mins, Zach Gorman for McElwaine 85mins Swilly Rovers; Gareth Wade, Dylan Hegarty, Shaun Crossan, Ronan Sweeney,Shay Durning, James McCahill, Brandon Toye, Daniel O’Donnell, Martin McDaid, Calvin Mooney, Ryan McDaid.Subs; Caolan Murray for Ryan McDaid 45 mins, Cathal Diver for Mooney 72 mins, Kyle Burke for Rona sweeney 75 mnsReferee; Marty McGarrigle.SUPER LETTERKENNY ROVERS HAMMER TEN-MAN SWILLY TO GO TOP OF USL was last modified: December 6th, 2015 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:Letterkenny RoverssoccerUSLlast_img read more
