So that’s scored for him: MSK PrasadDinesh Karthik will play as back-up wicketkeeper to MS Dhoni at the World CupBoard of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India’s squad for the 2019 World Cup on Monday in Mumbai and, as expected, there weren’t many surprises.Virat Kohli will lead a 15-member squad, which has veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik as back-up for first-choice stumper, MS Dhoni. Contrary to expectations, aggressive left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant did not make the cut.Dinesh Karthik’s inclusion has raised a few eyebrows as the Kolkata Knight Riders captain was not picked in the India squad for the five-match ODI series against Australia at home last month. Following Karthik’s exclusion, Rishabh Pant was given a few opportunities.Explaining the decision to choose Karthik over Pant, selection committee chairman MSK Prasad, who addressed a press conference in Mumbai, said Karthik’s experience of handling pressure situations in the past worked in his favour.Prasad also added that Pant is unfortunate to have missed out but that the young wicketkeeper-batsman is “full of talent” and has a lot of time at his disposal.”The situation that was discussed in the selection committee meeting is one of them [Rishabh Pant and Dinesh Karthik] will play in the XI only if MS Dhoni is injured. Under such circumstances in a crunch match, who is the best guy who can handle the pressure? That’s is the reason that went in favour of Dinesh Karthik,” MSK Prasad said.#TeamIndia for @ICC #CWC19 #MenInBlue pic.twitter.com/rsz44vHpgeBCCI (@BCCI) April 15, 2019He added: “Otherwise, Pant is full of talent, there’s a lot of time for him. It’s unfortunate that he has missed out.advertisement”Under pressure, we have seen Dinesh Karthik finish matches. So that’s scored for him.”Karthik had managed to do well in the limited opportunities he got to represent India in ODIs over the last three years. Karthik has scored 425 runs in 20 matches at an average of 46.75 in ODIs since 2017. Team India has tried the Kolkata Knight Riders captain at the No. 4 spot as well.Meanwhile, MSK Prasad added all bases have been covered in the 15-man squad led by Virat Kohli.”After the Champions Trophy, we have tried a few middle order options. We gave a few more chances to Rayudu but what Vijay Shankar offers is 3 dimensional. If the conditions are overcast. he might bowl a bit and he is a fantastic fielder. He is a batsman who can bowl,” Prasad said.”In the team, we have the luxury of 7 bowlers. We have covered all the bases and this is one of the most balanced Indian sides for the World Cup,” he added.INDIA SQUAD:Virat Kohli (captain)Rohit Sharma (vice-captain)Shikhar DhawanVijay ShankarKL RahulDinesh KarthikYuzvendra ChahalMS Dhoni (wicketkeeper)Kedar JadhavKuldeep YadavBhuvneshwar KumarJasprit BumrahHardik PandyaR JadejaMohammed Shami. Also Read | India team for World Cup is well-balanced, we have covered all bases: MSK PrasadAlso See:For sports news, updates, live scores and cricket fixtures, log on to indiatoday.in/sports.
